Joshua Davis' powder horn


This powder horn has the carving, "Success to the Sons of Liberty," with "Joshua Davis his Horn" and "Brattelborough" in the old colonial Cumberland County, New York, and is also inscribed for "October __ 1776."


Ensign Joshua Davis was born March 1, 1750 in Barre, Massachusetts to Nathaniel Davis and Susanna Lane, who later settled in Rockingham, Vermont. Joshua was a physician who moved to Newfane around 1779, after his Revolutionary War service.


Joshua Davis married first, Rhoda Balcom, and second, Mary Blake. His homestead was on the west side of the road leading from Newfane Hill to the present-day village of Williamsville. Joshua Davis died June 24, 1838 at the age of eighty eight and is buried in the Newfane Hill Cemetery.
